Past Volunteers' Expressions (Written by Beth Horton & Grant Hilts)
My boyfriend and I volunteered at the Murray Foundation Orphanage through Volnepal for 2 months in the winter of 2008. We were continually impressed and delighted by the enthusiasm and integrity of the children there. The program was very flexible, and we were able to choose what level of classes we taught and how often. All of the kids, from ages 4-12 were thrilled to have us in their classrooms. We were especially impressed with the kids’ behavior and attentiveness during lessons. Outside of class the kids were eager to play with us and always interested in learning new things. The kids’ English is quite good, so we were able to communicate with them in English smoothly. The orphanage is located in the peaceful countryside just outside the border of Chitwan National Park. The climate was very comfortable in the winter, reaching the mid 20Cs in the daytime. We’re sure that anyone would enjoy the time they spend in this lovely setting with these adorable disadvantaged children.

Outside of our volunteer work, Volnepal helped arrange a trek to Langtang National Park for us with the program’s tour guide Harri. Harri was also readily available to us for other trips, however we decided to travel on our own after familiarizing ourselves with the country a bit. Harri is a very kind, timid man, who invited us into his home and showed us around Bhaktapur. Nepal is a beautiful country with a rich culture. There are wide variety of activities to do and things to see. Food and lodging is very affordable. Unfortunately many areas have become a bit of a tourist trap (especially Thamel, Kathmandu), which makes the stay in the Bharatpur countryside a nice break from the street vendors, beggars and general hustle and bustle of the city. Pokhara is also another definite highlight. Like any trip to another country, there were undeniably some challenges and obstacles to deal with. Our advice would be to know as much as possible about what you’re getting yourself into before you go, which is why we highly recommend that you write to us with any further questions you gave about the program. Anish is a very busy man and is not always able to answer all of your concerns, so feel free to write to us at anytime.

Overall we really enjoyed our visit to Nepal. It was a very good learning experience for us and we hope also for the children of the Murray Foundation. Good Luck!
